Ethical and Environmental
This is a growing area of investment, although the headings cover a wide variety of approaches.
Ethical investment basically means choosing a fund that offers some type of screening to include or exclude an economic activity or area. For example, if you are concerned about human rights, then you may wish to avoid funds that invest in certain countries, or choose funds that seek to invest in companies that have a specific commitment to such an issue.
Screening approaches vary widely, and some funds that are tagged ethical may still invest in, say, oil related companies, whereas some would not. Advice is essential to ensure the funds chosen do actually reflect the investors concerns.
Environmental investing may or may not be ethical investing. Some environmental funds employ ethical screening, and some do not. This may sound contradictory. However in the field of sustainable energy, some existing oil and utility companies are the biggest investors.
This is a complex area, and, again, advice is essential. Paul Davis has experience of advising ethical investors and is happy to review existing ethical portfolios.
